Grade nomenclature directly drives discount-to-LME, inspection protocol, and destination eligibility — a Birch/Cliff mix loaded as Millberry is one of the most expensive classification disputes in non-ferrous trade.

Each non-ferrous grade in the ReMA circular carries a memorable code word — copper runs through Barley, Berry, Birch, Candy, Cliff, and additional entries for insulated wire (Dream, Druid), copper-bearing material (Elias), and alloyed streams. European exporters often quote "LME Grade A three-month minus X USD/MT" rather than a fixed flat price, resetting at contract nomination date.

Grade-by-Grade Breakdown for Smelter Sourcing

Barley — Bare Bright Copper Wire (Millberry)

Barley is the highest-purity copper scrap grade in common international trade. Specification requires clean, uncoated, untinned, unalloyed copper wire free of burnt material, brittle wire, excessive oxidation, and non-copper attachments. Copper content approaches refined metal — typically 99.9% or higher. Market participants often call Barley "Millberry" or "bare bright," though Millberry is a trade nickname rather than the ISRI code word itself.

Barley commands the tightest discount to LME because it can feed copper rod furnaces or direct-melt applications with minimal processing loss. Indicative European export quotes in 2025–2026 have ranged roughly USD 250–450 per tonne below LME three-month Grade A for multi-container parcels to nearby destinations, widening for single 20-foot containers to distant Asian ports with full inspection packages.

Supplier guidance: Strip insulation completely, remove brass fittings and steel armouring, do not torch-burn thin wire to remove varnish (creates brittle burnt copper rejected as downgrade), and bale homogeneously to avoid Cliff contamination in the core of bales.

Buyer guidance: Specify maximum allowable oxidation (often "no green verdigris powder"), magnet test pass for ferrous contamination, and radiation clearance certificate for export lots. Require pre-shipment photos and sample snips from bale cores, not only surface layers.

Berry — #1 Copper Wire

Berry covers clean, unalloyed copper wire of Number 1 grade — uninsulated, not tinned or solder-coated, minimum 99% copper content. Wire gauge may be smaller than Barley; the distinction is primarily cleanliness and form rather than a sharply different chemistry. Berry trades at a modest wider discount than Barley — indicative bands USD 350–550 per tonne below LME three-month in recent European export markets.

Berry suits rod producers and refineries accepting #1 wire with slightly lower density from fine gauge. Misclassification risk arises when thin insulated wire is partially stripped; buyers downgrade to insulated grades (Dream/Druid) with sharply wider discounts based on copper recovery yield rather than gross weight.

Candy and Cliff — #1 and #2 Copper Solids

Candy designates Number 1 copper solids: pipe, tube, bus bar, heavy gauge wire nodules, and similar wrought forms free of solder, brazed joints, and excessive corrosion — minimum 98% copper. Cliff covers Number 2 copper solids with light allowable coatings such as paint, tinning, or solder, minimum approximately 96% copper for Birch-class solids and lower for Cliff #2 mixed copper (around 94% in trade practice).

Market naming overlaps: "Candy" and "Cliff" sometimes appear paired with Birch in buyer RFQs referring to mixed #1/#2 solids packages. Precision in contract annexes prevents disputes — list prohibited alloys (aluminium bronze, nickel silver), maximum solder joint percentage, and whether turnings are excluded (turnings often carry oil and fire-scale risk requiring separate specs).

Indicative discounts: Birch-class #1 solids USD 500–700 below LME three-month; Cliff #2 mixed copper USD 600–800 below LME three-month, reflecting recovery loss and smaller buyer pool dominated by secondary refiners and brass mills tolerant of 4–6% impurity burden.

Birch — Number 2 Copper

Birch is Number 2 copper scrap: miscellaneous unalloyed copper with light coatings — paint, tin, solder, or attached fittings — minimum 96% copper content. Birch is not interchangeable with Barley or Berry; exporting Birch labelled as Millberry constitutes fraud in most jurisdictions and triggers contract termination plus industry blacklist risk.

Brass mills and secondary smelters in Turkey, India, and Southeast Asia are steady Birch/Cliff buyers. European exporters aggregate Birch from demolition, roofing, and industrial maintenance streams, sorting rigorously to keep leaded alloys and iron out of the package.

Smelter rule of thumb: every 1% of iron or zinc contamination beyond spec can erase the commercial advantage of buying scrap versus cathode — sort at source, not at destination.

LME Relationship: Benchmarking and Contract Mechanics

LME Grade A copper as reference

The LME copper contract settles against Grade A copper cathode conforming to BS EN 1978:1998 with minimum 99.9935% Cu and defined impurity maxima. Insulated copper cable scrap trades on estimated copper recovery yield rather than gross bale weight. Dream (high-yield insulation) and Druid (lower-yield) ISRI codes describe insulation types and expected stripper or furnace recovery percentages. Pricing formula: (LME copper price × recoverable copper % × yield discount factor) minus processing and freight.

Exporters should provide sample burn or strip tests on mixed insulated lots before quoting. Buyers should reject generic "50% copper content" assumptions without surveyor-verified yield on representative bale samples.

Inspection, Sampling, and Export Documentation

Pre-shipment inspection protocol

Standard copper scrap export practice includes:

  • Visual grade verification against ISRI definitions.
  • Magnet test for ferrous contamination on each bale or sampled units.
  • Weight certificate from certified weighbridge.

Documents smelters expect

  • Commercial invoice referencing ISRI grade and LME discount formula.
  • Packing list with bale counts and average weights.
  • Bill of lading clean on board.
  • Certificate of origin where required for import duty preference or anti-dumping clearance.
  • Non-radioactive certificate and environmental/export licence where applicable.

Smelter and Refiner Qualification Criteria

Primary smelters feeding anode furnaces prefer Barley, Berry, and selected Candy solids with low impurity vectors (bismuth, arsenic, antimony, lead). Secondary refineries and brass mills absorb Birch/Cliff and insulated wire with appropriate charge calculation software. Before sourcing a new export programme, match your sort capability to destination technology:

  • Direct-melt rod plants: Barley/Berry only; zero tolerance for alloy contamination.
  • Anode furnaces with fire refining: Candy/Birch mixes with impurity assay limits in contract.
  • Brass mills: Birch/Cliff with controlled lead and zinc bands.
  • Wire choppers: Insulated Dream/Druid with yield guarantees.

Request the buyer's published scrap purchase specification or charge mix guidelines — major smelters publish allowable impurity maxima per element that override generic ISRI language when stricter.

Container Loading and Physical Handling

Copper scrap exports commonly ship in 20-foot or 40-foot containers with bales or loose heavy solids. Load density affects freight economics: bare bright bales achieve favourable weight-per-container; bulky Birch solids with air gaps may underweight containers unless compression is applied ethically without hiding downgrade material in bale cores.

Seal integrity matters for high-value loads — use bolt seals recorded on bill of lading, and avoid transshipment ports with history of pilferage unless insured and surveyed at transfer.

Common Disputes and Contract Protections

Frequent arbitration topics include: grade downgrade upon destination inspection (Barley claimed, Birch found), moisture and oxidation not visible at loadport, radiation false positives, and LME reference date disagreement. Mitigations:

  • Agree ISRI grade with photographic appendix and retained sample protocol.
  • Define downgrade matrix: e.g. if destination surveyor classifies >10% of weight as Cliff, entire lot repriced at Cliff discount.

Market Outlook for Copper Scrap Exporters

Electrification, grid expansion, and data-centre build-out sustain long-run copper demand, keeping scrap competitively priced against cathode even as primary mine supply tightens. Regulatory emphasis on recycled content in EU and North American manufacturing creates structural pull for cleanly sorted Barley and Berry from reliable export yards. Yards investing in sensor-based sorting, XRF alloy detection, and radiation monitoring capture smelter programmes that less disciplined competitors cannot qualify for.

Price volatility on the LME transmits directly to scrap offers within days — suppliers should index sales contracts rather than fix flat USD/MT for quarters unless hedging copper exposure separately.

Practical Checklist Before First Export Shipment

  • Confirm buyer smelter approval list includes your yard or assign subcontractor with valid licence.
  • Run internal audit sorting trial against target ISRI grade; measure downgrade percentage.
  • Book pre-shipment inspector acceptable to both parties.
  • Align LME reference date, discount USD/MT, and payment instrument in signed contract.
  • Verify import licence and radiation requirements in destination country (India, China, Turkey, and others vary).
